OBAFGKM

2024, 4K video, 00:07:13, color, sound

Following a feminist approach, the video work O B A F G K M refers to the historically determined sexism in science and technology and its manifestation in the transfer of knowledge. The video shows a performer with a VR headset who translates the sequence of letters O B A F G K M into body movements. This sequence of letters is a scheme introduced by the scientist Annie Jump Cannon over a hundred years ago, which determines the spectral classes for classifying stars. Since then, the widespread sexist catchphrase “Oh, be a fine girl! Kiss me!”. In an interplay of body, architecture and language, the video work experiments with alternative mnemonics and new word combinations that reverse the power relations and create new associative contexts.
